What would you do if saw neglect?

Some people do not know who to call or what to do if they spot animal neglect. If you see ANY kind of neglect call your local law enforcement first. Rescues are here for support to the law enforcement when needed. We also like to work with owners that have neglected animals and get the animals out of the bad situation before they get in bad enough condition for law enforcement to get involved. Things go much smoother when an owner is willing to surrender their animals when they can no longer care for them rather than going through the court system.  DO NOT DUMP your animal on just anyone. Preferably do not dump them at all, but if you need somewhere to go with them, please contact a rescue and see if they can help. We have seen numerous cases where someone who was not skilled in rehabilitating an animal ended up with a special needs animal that they could not care for and the horse got much worse before getting better or they never got better at all.

The following story includes graphic images. Readers beware.

The rescue received a phone call today about a horse that had been caught in the fence and injured and in need of the rescue's help because the current owner could not afford to care for the horses injuries. After arriving on the scene it was evident that the horse had more going on than just a cut lip. The wound to the lip was quite severe but nothing some stitches and TLC couldn't handle. The horse was unable to stand and was SEVERLY emancipated. There was very little meat on his bones. The current owner had taken him in because of his condition, but due to lack of knowledge in rehabilitating a horse of this condition, he was improperly cared for. He had grown weak and lost use of his hips and could no longer stand. The vet came immediately when we called and recommended the horse be put down. After listening to his heart, the vet thought he was already in pain and nearing the end. This sweet nameless boy died with us holding him and talking to him, letting him know he was heading to a better place. He did not deserve to die like this, he deserved a chance at a better life! His original owenrs should have called a rescue or found help before he got to this point. We need donations to help cover the cost of the vet trip. The owner did not have the funds so the rescue called the vet and paid for the vet trip so the horse would not die a slow and painful death. Anything you can donate is greatly appreciated! It is sad this sweet horse had no name and noone he really knew with him in his last hours. He will always hold a place in our hearts as the unnamed beauty that touched our lives.

Pictures were taken prior to the vet arriving. The poor boy was tossing in pain. If only someone would have called a rescue when they were first unable to care for him instead of dumping him on someone else.
